Job Summary: The Technical Writer is responsible for planning, organizing, writing, and editing user documentation related to Geographic Solutions’ product line. We are the leading SaaS-based software provider in the workforce development industry. The Technical Writer will work with various internal teams, including software developers, project managers, business analysts, and other SMEs to create end-user and system administrator documentation. The Technical Writer will also be responsible for contributing to release notes, business proposals, and other collateral documents. We are looking for candidates who are highly organized, posses a keen eye for detail, can work independently in a fast-paced environment, and produce multiple deliverables with varying deadlines. Candidates should be self-starters and creative problem solvers and have the flexibility to learn new products and technologies quickly and efficiently.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Create and maintain required end-user documents and reference materials
Capture and maintain screenshots, flowcharts, graphics, and tables used in documents
Edit and proofread documents to ensure correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, and page layout
Create/index/review/edit documents that adhere to style and formatting guidelines (e.g., use of composition, formatting, references, styles, graphics, etc.)
Coordinate work with team members for document review purposes (to ensure adherence to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures)
Maintain files and records for documentation history purposes
Test end-user documentation against software to ensure document accuracy and completeness
Test administrative controls (settings/parameters) and document their use/effect in the system
Contribute to the improvement of documentation standards, tools, and processes

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to establish priorities, follow direction, work independently, and achieve objectives with minimal supervision
Ability to communicate with diverse levels of personnel to discuss documentation and clarify software functionality (e.g., confer with business analysts, project managers, developers, etc.)
Ability to analyze existing technical documents or specifications to determine the application’s operational intent
Ability to interpret technical information and document this information clearly and concisely
Ability to report software anomalies encountered during documentation efforts
Ability to be analytical, inquisitive, and proactive (e.g., suggest software changes when documentation efforts identify possible usability enhancements)
Ability to organize
Ability to multi-task
Ability to meet deadlines and manage time appropriately
Ability to receive and take positive action on constructive feedback and editing of written documentation
Credentials and Experience:

Bachelor’s/associate’s degree in English, Journalism, Education, or a related field, and
At least two years’ technical writing experience or
Equivalent combination of education and experience
Special Requirements:

Extreme proficiency in MS Word (2013, 2016), particularly in the creation and use of: styles, templates, index tags, cross references, and complex graphics (e.g., drawing canvases, inline with text, etc.)
Demonstrated experience using MS SharePoint, Adobe Acrobat, TechSmith SnagIt
Demonstrated experience using MS Visio and MS Excel
Experience with Accessibility and/or Usability/User-Centered Design standards for documentation is a plus
Demonstrated professionalism
Demonstrated oral and written communication skills
Flexibility to prioritize tasks as customer/company needs change
Willingness to contribute non-standard or weekend work to meet project deadlines, as requested by supervisor or senior management
