ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:

The University of South Florida Institute for Applied Engineering (USF IAE) is a Florida not-for-profit corporation and USF Direct Support Organization organized to support and benefit USF including without limitation the USF College of Engineering. IAE provides agile, best value engineering products and services to enhance the performance, effectiveness, and safety of its customers, including the Department of Defense; other federal, state, and local agencies; and industry. IAE provides these engineering solutions in alignment with its core competencies: Autonomous Systems; Human Performance Enhancement; Data Analytics; Cyber and Electromagnetic Domain Security; and Transportation and Energy infrastructure.  IAE is currently executing a number of contracts supporting Department of Defense and industry, to include a 5-year, $85M task order contract with United States Special Operations Command to provide applied research and advanced technology development products and services in support of their requirements.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Assistant Director for IT and Communications, this Sys Admin II position is responsible for the overall management and operations of IAE’s multiple computer systems, servers, networks and audio-visual systems.  The position requires extensive knowledge of not only state-of-the-art IT technologies, but also government and university regulations concerning the protection of information on both classified and controlled unclassified IT systems.  The Systems Administrator routinely interacts with Institute researchers, staff, students, USF IT professionals, and sponsor counterparts in the accomplishment of his/her duties.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Designs, procures, implements, and manages complex local, wide area and cloud-based network systems hosted at multiple locations on and off campus.  Installs, configures, and maintains multiple servers and workstations, ensuring proper integration with other university computer systems.  Supports operations and maintenance of customer computer systems located at Institute facilities, including U.S. Government computers and networks.

Performs software installations and upgrades to operating systems and layered software applications.  Monitors and tunes systems to achieve optimum performance levels.  Manages multiple linked databases to include security, data safety and integrity, disaster recovery, and development of bulk data import/export procedures.

With Asst Director for IT & Comm, manages required system security procedures, to include firewalls, host & client access, logs, file permissions, and user accounts.  At the direction of the Asst Director for IT and Comm and w/ Facility Security & Export Control Officer, ensures compliance with govt policies governing protection of classified/controlled unclassified information, including the NISPOM, NIST 800.171, the Department of Defense’s Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification, and other statute and regulations.  Implements IAE-specific policies, procedures & user agreements for system use/services.

Develops and implements various training, job aids, and instruction for users on the use of operating systems, networking, software applications, and databases.  Provides desktop and audio/visual system support to Institute employees and partners.  Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to governing statutes and regulations, state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems.

Guides the work of other staff and/or students engaged in similar functions.  Performs other information technology duties as required to support the work of the unit.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, MIS or other field involving software and analytical training and two years of IT related work experience; or a Bachelor’s degree with no specific required field and three years of IT related work experience, OR a combination of six years of IT related work experience and validated training. Preparation for a relevant IT certification, validated through certification requirements and documentation of completion, is considered to be related training.

PREFERRED:

Four years of relevant experience as a Systems Administrator.
